Bishan Stadium, Sunday, April 29, 2012 — Jannah Wong delivered Singapore’s only gold medal in the youth competition at the seventh South-east Asia Youth Athletics Championships when she finished first in the girls’ 100 metres hurdles final.
The championships had a full complement of events for the youth athletes, but also featured an under-21 category, where the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays were contested. Ng Chin Hui won Singapore’s only gold medal on the first day of competition in the boys’ under-21 400m.
Jannah delivered likewise in the sprint hurdles final, finishing dominantly in a time of 14.6 seconds, seven tenths of a second ahead of Indonesian runner-up Emilia Nova. Electronic timing was not available for this race.
The 15-year-old’s performance compares favourably with her personal best of 14.82 seconds recorded in February this year. Hand-timed performances are about 0.24 seconds faster than electronically-timed ones, in races that are shorter than 400m.
Singapore finished the two-day meet with one gold, ten silver and ten bronze medals. Thailand topped the gold-medal tally with 10 while Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia won nine, seven and six respectively.
