Palembang, Indonesia, June 1-3, 2012 — Brilliant Chua set a new National Under-14 record in the Boys’ 200 metres Breaststroke when he clocked a time of 2 minutes 27.84 seconds at the 36th South-east Asian Age Group Swimming Championships.

In doing so, he won the gold medal in the Boys’ 12-and-under category at the annual championships, and also smashed the previous meet record of 2:33.19, set in 2008, by current National Open record holder Lionel Khoo.

Brilliant, a Secondary One student at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), broke Aaron Teo’s national under-14 mark of 2:30.00 set in March 2010.

Dylan Koo, also a first year student at ACS(I) and like Brilliant, a double-gold medallist at April’s National Schools’ Meet, came within seven hundredths of a second of putting his name in the record books. He won the Boys’ 12 and under 200m Butterfly gold medal in a time of 2:10.50, which obliterated both the field and the meet record. Dylan won the race by nearly seven seconds and also bettered the meet record by over three and a half seconds.

As it turned out, Dylan’s performance was just out of reach of Quah Zheng Wen’s two-year-old national under-14 record of 2:10.43.

The Singapore contingent won 16 gold, 16 silver and 26 bronze medals.
