Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, June 25, 2012 — Boon Lay Secondary held off a persistent Hwa Chong Institution to win 27-24 in their first West Zone C Division Basketball Championship match.
Boon Lay led 15-8 at half time.
Boon Lay took advantage of a sluggish Hwa Chong in the first quarter to romp to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.
Hwa Chong recovered from their early jitters, but despite outscoring their rivals in the next three quarters, they failed to recover from their poor start.
Hwa Chong Institution captain, Shi Quan (#8), acknowledged that they “did not get it together from the start. We tried to but in the end it was not enough”.
Hwa Chong ran a tight defense throughout the match. Boon Lay captain, Daniel Poh (#9), was heavily marked by two to three Hwa Chong defenders at a go because of his physique and height. He eventually racked up 14 points, making him the top scorer for Boon Lay.
A modest Daniel Poh said: “The victory was due to the team’s hard work and perseverance.”
The team had spent their June holidays playing against schools in Kuala Lumpur in preparation for the championship.
Boon Lay’s next game is against Clementi Town Secondary whilst Hwa Chong Institution will try to pick themselves up from this defeat to get their first victory against Kranji Secondary. Both play on Wednesday, June 27th.
