PESEB, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 — Queensway Secondary emerged victorious in the battle for top spot of Group B after narrowly beating St. Andrew’s Secondary 44-40 in the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
The win meant Queensway finished Round 1 with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record while the Saints are 2-1. Both teams advance into the second round.
Queensway captain, Hao Jun (#14), scored a game-high 19 points, while St. Andrew’s Gerald Yee (#7) was top-scorer for his team, putting in 15 points.
In a game where neither team dominated, Queensway managed to outlast a tired St. Andrew’s side to hand St. Andrew’s their first defeat.
St. Andrew’s had a slow start but soon caught up, making it 16-16 in the fourth minute of the second quarter. They led 28-24 at half time after two interceptions from Gerald Yee (#7) gave him a clear shot at the basket.
However, better accuracy from Queensway helped them pull ahead in the last two quarters. Nerves and fatigue got the better of St. Andrew’s when they could not convert lay-ups even when unmarked by any defender.
Even though they lost, St. Andrew’s Captain Bryan Tan (#15) felt that his team played well against a strong opponent and put up a good fight.
Both teams will only know whom they will face in the next round when the draw is conducted on Thursday, July 5th.
