Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 6, 2012 – Nan Hua High School defeated a determined Hua Yi Secondary side 36-23 to enter the second round of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
The win gives Nan Hua a first round, 3-1 win-loss record, and they are expected to finish second behind Jurong Secondary in Group C. Hua Yi’s loss means that they exit the championship.
The game was a closely-fought affair, with Nan Hua leading only by 14-12 at half time. Nan Hua had many chances at the basket but were plagued by inaccuracies and Hua Yi’s tight defence. Nan Hua eventually held on to emerge 36-23 victors.
Ashwin Ravi (#10) from Nan Hua was the key threat, sinking 12 points.
Hua Yi’s Malcolm Lim was the top scorer for his team with 8 points.
Despite the loss, Hua Yi captain Alex Chua (#9) was happy with his team’s improved performance.
“The team has improved a lot but we can do better. Our defence can be tighter and we must improve on our turnovers. We will try to win our next match against Jurong,” Alex said.
Hua Yi will meet Jurong, who have won all of their matches so far, on Tuesday, July 10th, at Clementi Sports Hall.
Nan Hua will know the teams they will meet in the second round when the draw takes place on the same day.
