West Zone C Div Vball (Girls): Bukit Panjang beat Jurong to enter semi-finals

PESEB, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 — Bukit Panjang Government High beat Jurong Secondary 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) to qualify for the semi-finals of the West Zone C Division Volleyball Championship as group winners.

Bukit Panjang pressured Jurong right at the start and exploited weaknesses in Jurong’s defense to score several points. Bukit Panjang scored a total of 30 points from 16 kills, 1 block and 13 service aces, with captain Chua Xinghuan (#7) contributing 8 of the aces.

Jurong managed half that number with 15 points from 12 kills, 2 blocks and 1 service ace. They also had 21 defensive errors as opposed to Bukit Panjang’s four, losing several points from Bukit Panjang’s serves.

Bukit Panjang’s Chua Xinghuan (#7) was the match top scorer with 12 points from four kills and her 8 service aces while Jurong’s Sharelin Sim (#8) was the top scorer for her team with 8 points scored from 7 kills and 1 block.

Bukit Panjang established a comfortable lead right at the start as they raced to lead 9-2. A timeout by Jurong did not stop their scoring streak as Lexuan (Bukit Panjang #9) scored from a ‘C ball’ right upon the restart. Jurong managed to eventually narrow the score gap to just three points but saw Bukit Panjang pull away to lead 17-9, prompting another timeout.

Bukit Panjang held on to their lead and quickly sealed the set 25-15.

Jurong started the second set on a more positive note as Sharelin (Jurong #8) took three consecutive points via two spikes and a block.

However, Bukit Panjang quickly came back and tied the score 4-4, the last two points being scored via service aces from Xinghuan (Bukit Panjang #7). Xinghuan then took the lead for Bukit Panjang as she fired off two more service aces.

Jurong managed to keep the score close but Bukit Panjang managed to hold on to their lead.

Bukit Panjang gradually pulled ahead as Jurong continued to have defensive problems. Bukit Panjang continuously aimed at Jurong’s weak spot and scored many points from their service. They were soon leading 22-15 when Jurong called a timeout.

Jurong could not stage a comeback as Bukit Panjang continued their momentum to finish the set 25-16.

Despite the loss, Jurong still have a chance at qualifying for the semi-final. They next face River Valley High tomorrow and a win will ensure them a place in the next round as runner-up of Group Q.

In the other group match, Nanyang Girls’ High thrashed Hillgrove Secondary 2-0 (25-8, 25-4) to qualify for the semi-finals as well. They will play Hua Yi to determine who will finish top of Group P.
