Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 – Riverside Secondary qualified for the second round of the North Zone C Division basketball Championship after defeating Nan Chiau High 25-20.
Phyo Min Tun (#15) of Nan Chiau High finished with a game-high 8 points while Alvin Looi (#14) was Riverside’s top scorer with five.
In their previous games, both Riverside and Nan Chiau had beaten North View Secondary, which meant this was a crucial game to determine who finished second behind Group C winners, Woodgrove Secondary, who topped the group with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record.
Riverside finished second with a 2-1 record while Nan Chiau ended up third with a 1-2 record. North View lost all their three games.
The first half of the game saw Riverside dominating the court with their offense.
In the first quarter, Nan Chiau were unable to keep possession of the ball, which resulted in limited chances to score. This allowed Riverside to draw ahead 5-0.
Nan Chiau were able to gain five points in the second quarter, but were still trailing 5-11 at the half-time break. Both teams had inaccurate shooting and this prevented either team from gaining a strong lead.
An 8-4 third quarter saw Riverside take a 19-9 lead into the final quarter.
In the last quarter, Riverside were still leading by five points with two minutes to go as Nan Chiau never gave up the fight.
While Nan Chiau outscored Riverside 11-6 in the final quarter, it was not enough to overhaul Riverside.
Bryan Sim (#6) of Riverside said that he was pleased with his team’s defense.
“We were able to stop their attacks at half court,” he said, which allowed Riverside to dominate for the majority of the game.
“However, when we were pressed, our attacks were useless,” he admitted, when asked about what he thought his team needed to improve on.
“We couldn’t get past the team, and we usually fouled because we weren’t able to score within the time limit,” added Bryan.
