Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 — Deyi Secondary consistently kept just out of Pei Hwa’s reach, finishing the game 48–41 winners to secure their place in the second round of the North Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Deyi’s third win gives them a 3-1 win-loss record while Pei Hwa lost all their four first round games. Deyi and Christ Church Secondary (3-1) made it through to the next round at the expense of Hougang Secondary. Even though Hougang finished with a 3-1 record as well, they lost out on points difference.

Pei Hwa, who generally were larger than their opponents, kept Deyi away from the basket with an intimidating zone defense. However, Deyi responded by using fast breaks and long forward passes on turnovers.

Deyi’s Kevin Chiang (#10) excelled in scoring with mid-range jump shots over the heads of Pei Hwa’s defense. Kevin was the highest scorer for his team, earning a game-high 17 points in the three quarters he played in.

Deyi worked hard to make the most of their scoring opportunities. Chua Yong Le (#4) and Foo Chee Yee (#5) were able to intercept some of Pei Hwa’s passes and make the turnovers count. Of the attacks that did get past, Yong Le was able to capitalise on Pei Hwa’s misses, swiftly collecting the rebounds and passing ahead to score.

On the other hand, Pei Hwa had many scoring opportunities, having little trouble advancing the ball through Deyi’s defense. Ian Tan (#11), the top scorer from Pei Hwa with 10 points, was able to drive right past Deyi’s defense for lay-ups.

Freddy Tan (#12) also put up a strong showing, able to repeatedly catch his own rebounds despite the efforts of the Deyi defense. However, for the most part the team was plagued with inaccuracies, and not many of their shots found their mark.

In the end, the match came down to Pei Hwa’s inability to convert their shots and close the gap. Although Pei Hwa outscored Deyi 12-9 in the last quarter, it was too little too late. In the last 20 seconds, Kevin Chiang put in four points for Deyi to put an emphatic end to the match.

Deyi’s first opponent in the second round will be Bowen Secondary, which topped its group in the first round with a 4-0 record. The match will take place at Singapore Basketball Centre, on Wednesday, July 11th, 12pm.
