Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 — North Vista crushed Woodlands Secondary, taking the game 123-6 to claim their fourth win and top their group in the first round of the North Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. North Vista will proceed on to the second round.
This is the third game this round that North Vista have beaten their opponents by a margin of over 70 points.
This is also Woodlands Secondary’s fourth loss, and the team exits the championship at the bottom of the group.
The match appeared little more than a warm-up for North Vista Secondary. Less than six minutes into the second quarter, North Vista were already 50 points ahead of their opponents.
North Vista’s entire team made the scoresheet, each scoring at least as much as the top scorer from Woodlands. North Vista’s Christian co Pepito (#4) finished with a game-high of 29, including two 3-pointers.
While Woodlands did make attempts at the basket, North Vista’s players — each a head and shoulders taller than any of Woodland’s players — were able to physically bar them from entering the perimeter. Shaun Lee (#8) was able to score four points for Woodlands by shooting from just inside the three-point line, but any plays beyond that were completely shut out.
Woodlands’ Ng Chin Wai (#6) was notable for his repeated and valiant attempts to drive through the North Vista defense, but for all his efforts, he barely made the score sheet.
Woodlands suffered greatly from slow reaction to turnovers. With North Vista not being complacent about defense, Woodlands found itself losing possession from intercepted passes, defensive rebounds, careless fumbles, and having the ball go out-of-bounds due to defensive pressure. When North Vista got the ball, the players would not hesitate to drive it down to the basket and score, often while the Woodlands team was still on the opposite half of the court.
At one particularly dismal point in the fourth quarter, Justine Carlo (#14), Jolo Emmanuel (#9) and Nigel Go (#12) from North Vista were standing around Woodlands’s basket, making repeated and leisurely shots, just catching their own rebounds until one of them scored — all while the entire Woodlands team watched patiently from the other side of the court beneath North Vista’s basket, where they had just lost possession.
Woodlands did have its bursts of fighting spirit. Chin Wai (#6), Shaun (#8) and See Teck Ming (#12) worked hard to mark their taller opponents to prevent them from advancing the ball. On many of North Vista’s offensives, Chin Wai and Shaun were willing to chase their taller opponents all the way to down the length of the court to somehow, some way, slow them down.
In the end, however, in height, speed, and technique, Woodlands were no match for North Vista.
North Vista will meet Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary in its first match of the second round. The match will take place at Singapore Basketball Centre, on Wednesday, July 11th, 1.15pm.
