Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 — Teck Whye Secondary came from behind to upset School of Science and Technology 49-33 to top Group E.

Both teams had already qualified for Round 2 of the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship before their game. With identical 3-0 win-loss records before tip off, this was a top-of-the-table clash on the final day of Round 1.

SciTech surged ahead in the first quarter to lead 18-11. SciTech’s lanky and fast captain, Yi Chieh (#11), managed to steal the ball from his opponents on multiple occasions and had a higher reach than anyone else going for rebounds. His high conversion rate helped him finish the game as his team’s top scorer with 16 points.

However, SciTech could not sustain their early run and were overwhelmed by fatigue by the middle of the third quarter. Their lack of stamina showed as their shooting became more erratic. Teck Whye capitalised on this by playing a fast game, ensuring that SciTech could not keep up.

Teck Whye restricted SciTech to only three points in the third quarter as they took a 39-31 lead into the fourth.

Teck Whye’s Adam (#12) had a particularly strong showing. He single-handedly put in more than half of his team’s total points and scored all of his team’s 15 points in the second quarter to finish with a game-high 27 points.

Adam’s agility gave him an edge over the fatigued SciTech defenders as he managed to dodge the defence and score unchallenged. The entry of Teck Whye’s captain, Nick (#6), midway through the third quarter, also gave Teck Whye a much needed boost in the attack.

In the fourth quarter, the SciTech coach introduced fresh players as he rested both the team captain Yi Chieh (#11) and vice-captain, Ryan Pek (#10), in the hopes of turning the game around, but they still went down 33-49 at the final buzzer.

Yi Chieh (#11) felt that his team might have given up too easily and depended too much on a few key players.

He said: “The team played okay, but in order for the team to improve, everyone must improve together.”

He added that though his team has room for improvement, getting into Round 2 was already a big achievement for them since they are a new team, but they will try their best to finish in the Top 4.

This is SciTech’s second year in the West Zone Championship.

Teck Whye, on the other hand, were elated over their win. When asked what their coach told them that helped them turn the game in their favour, the boys chimed in together: “To try our best and go for every ball!”

Teck Whye hope to keep up the fighting spirit when they meet Hillgrove Secondary in their first Round 2 clash on Thursday, July 12, 2012, while School of Science and Technology go up against Group C winners Jurong Secondary on the same day.
