Anglican High School, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 — In a frenetic and fast-paced match, Anglican High took the game 34-32 after spending the second and third quarters trying to catch Dunman High, who had established an 8-point lead in the East Zone C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

In the fourth quarter, Dunman High were put into a penalty situation after committing a total of seven fouls in the second half. This gave Anglican High two free throws for every one of Dunman High’s fouls. This had a significant impact on the result — after tying up the game just before the final minute, Anglican High won the game by two points, both from free throws.

Just before the final minute, Anglican High’s Charmaine Lam (#12) made a free throw to put her team ahead at 33-32. The last minute of game time took more than five minutes to complete due to multiple consecutive time-outs called by both sides. In the last 17 seconds, Shannon Tham (#4) made another free throw for Anglican High, putting the score out of Dunman High’s reach for the short remainder of the game.

Dunman High’s Mavis Chng (#8) was the top scorer for her team, with a game-high 12 points, including two three-pointers. Throughout the game, Mavis made many attempts from outside the perimeter in order to get past Anglican’s defense.

Dunman High started strong, ending the first quarter with a 14-6 lead. Dunman High’s Jerlin Toh (#7), who was the second-highest scorer in the game, made all of her 10 points in this quarter.

However, as the game wore on, they began to have more trouble penetrating Anglican High’s man-to-man defense, which limited their passing and cut down their scoring opportunities. Mavis (#8) and Jerlin (#7) were able to advance the ball quickly to Anglican High’s side of the court, but were not always able to score.

Dunman High’s zone defense also kept Anglican High out. While Anglican High were able to advance the ball to Dunman High’s perimeter, once there, they had to search hard for opportunities to score. Anglican High’s top scorer, Charmaine Lam (#12) with eight points, was always ready at Dunman High’s basket to receive passes and make the shot.

Lack of accuracy on both sides, as well as the aggressive defending, resulted in many turnovers over the course of the match. It was not unusual for the ball to cross the court three times before either team was able to score. Neither team faltered through the course of the match. Even though Anglican High caught up in the third quarter, the score remained extremely close all the way to the end.
