PESEB, Thursday, July 12, 2012 – Guangyang Secondary held off a determined Queensway Secondary to win 55-42, earning them a second win in the Round 2 of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
Guangyang had beaten Gan Eng Seng in their previous game, while this was Queensway’s first second round game.
The game was a tense affair with both teams fighting hard for a win. Guangyang started the game off strongly, pulling away to an early 12-6 lead in the first quarter. After a pep talk by their coach, Queensway picked up their game to level the score at 12-12. Guangyang managed to hold off a resurgent Queensway to take the first quarter 13-16.
In the second quarter, missed passes by both teams caused many turnovers. Queensway managed to gain a slight lead on Guangyang, winning the first half 29-28.
However, Queensway could not sustain their lead in the second half as they could not cope with Guangyang’s aggressive style of play. Even an injury to Guangyang captain Clement Koh (#11) was not enough to stop Guangyang from surging to a 10-point lead in the third quarter.
Queensway could not find the basket, missing numerous free throws. Queensway paid the price for missed passes and poor shooting and eventually fell 42-55 to Guangyang.
Andy Tan (#13) was key to Guangyang’s attack. Small in size, his speed and accurate lay-ups enabled him to emerge with a game-high 21 points. Queensway’s Hao Jun (#14) used his height to his advantage to sink a team-high 14 points.
Guangyang captain Clement Koh (#11), vice-captain Donovan Kok (#6), and teammate Zdulfika bin Ahakasah (#4) were happy with the win.
“The team played well and fought hard. We expected a tough match against Queensway and we did not give up,” said Clement.
Zdulfika agreed, saying: “We were accurate and put in most of our shots. Our defence was also good.”
Donovan picked out teammate Andy as the stand-out player for their team.
“He played well and did not give up,” Donovan said.
Clement expects the team to make it to the semi-finals. When asked which team is their strongest competitor in their group, he said: “Catholic High.”
Guangyang will meet Catholic High on Friday, July 20th, but before that they will have to meet Fairfield Secondary on Monday, July 16th.
Queensway will meet Catholic High on Wednesday, July 18th.
All matches will be played at PESEB.
