Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 13, 2012 – Nan Hua High paid dearly for poor shooting, losing 29-37 to Bukit Panjang Government High in the second round of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
This is the second loss for Nan Hua after previously losing narrowly to New Town Secondary. Meanwhile, Bukit Panjang chalked up their second win of the second round, and are on course to making it to the semi-finals.
The first quarter saw many turnovers with both teams committing many missed passes. Bukit Panjang edged out Nan Hua to take the quarter 6-4.
The tide turned in the second quarter, with Nan Hua gaining a 13-12 lead as Bukit Panjang committed many fouls and had an error-filled quarter.
Nan Hua could not hold on to their slender lead in the second half, though, as they failed to convert their many chances at the basket.
Nan Hua’s Cheah Yan (#4) then accumulated five fouls and had to sit out for most part of the last quarter. Bukit Panjang held on to win 37-29.
Nan Hua’s speedy forward, Au Jun Wei (#6), was a threat to the Bukit Panjang defence, sinking a game-high 16 points. However, it was not enough for his team to avoid defeat.
Ang Zi Yang (#9) from Bukit Panjang was the top scorer for this team with 11 points.
Bukit Panjang captain Shawn Ee (#7) and vice-captain Dini Matin (#4) were happy with the win.
“We played a good game. We expected a tough match against Nan Hua and we played well,” said Shawn.
Dini also picked out New Town as one of their strongest competitors in their group.
When asked about their targets for the competition, Dini said: “We expect to make it to the semi-finals but we are not sure if we can make it to the final.”
Bukit Panjang will face off with New Town on Monday, July 16th. Nan Hua will hope to earn their first win of the second round when they face Teck Whye Secondary on the same day. Both games will be held at Clementi Sports Hall.
