Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 13, 2012 — River Valley High redeemed themselves after a narrow loss to Jurong West Secondary with a 49-26 defeat of Clementi Town Secondary in the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
This was Clementi Town’s second defeat after going down 13-71 to Unity Secondary in Group Y.
River Valley now have a 1-1 win-loss record while Clementi are 0-2, a record also shared by the School of Science and Technology. Unity and Jurong are setting the pace in the group with 2-0 records each.
River Valley’s captain, Darren Leung (#13), was top scorer with a game-high of 22 points and was key in putting in most of River Valley’s shots from under the basket. Billy (#9) from Clementi Town was his team’s top scorer, putting in 8 points.
Clementi Town led for half of the first quarter, but mispasses and lack of accuracy in front of the basket allowed River Valley to catch up and gain a 9-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
It was an aggressive match but it was heartening to see both sides helping their respective opponents off the ground after a foul. Both teams were heavily marked by man-on-man defence, so the winner of the match boiled down to which team committed the least fouls and gave away fewer free throws than the other. River Valley was better in this regard, and could convert their free throws to eventually win the match 49-26.
Clementi Town’s captain, Ace (#6), admitted that conversion was a problem for the team. He said: “We were off our standard today. We could actually win, but we missed a lot of shots and did not have stamina.”
With two losses already, Clementi Town’s immediate goal is to win their next game and not be ranked last in their group. They face the School of Science and Technology next on Monday, July 16th.
River Valley were ecstatic with their win. Captain Darren Leong (#13) thought that his team fought hard, but they would need to fight even harder when they face Jurong Secondary also on Monday, July 16th.
