Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 16, 2012 — Clementi Town Secondary came from behind to snatch a 34-32 victory from the hands of the School of Science and Technology in the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship Round 2.
Both teams were gunning for their first win in Round 2 to avoid a last place finish in Group Y. Both had lost their previous two games.
SciTech captain, Yi Chieh (#11), was top scorer with a game-high 19 points, while Clementi Town’s Jason (#14) was his team’s top scorer with 15.
SciTech gained an early lead in the first quarter. A basket from SciTech’s Daniel (#8) and a free throw from Captain Yi Chieh (#11) in the last minute of the first quarter helped SciTech edge out Clementi Town 12-11.
SciTech managed to add six points to their score and began to pull ahead by the middle of the second quarter, but Clementi Town closed the gap to one point due to some poor defending by SciTech and many missed baskets, to trail 17-18.
Clementi Town’s Yi Fan (#12) had an exceptional showing in the third quarter. He managed to score on a fast break and added another 3-pointer while terrorizing the SciTech defence with his dribbling. Vice-captain of Clementi Town, Ace (#6), was also a key contributor to Clementi Town’s comeback. His strong and constant presence in defence restricted SciTech from scoring on multiple occasions. By the end of the third quarter, Clementi Town led 28-24.
The last minute of the fourth quarter was particularly intense, with three time-outs within 10 seconds.
With Clementi Town leading 34-32, SciTech was in control of the ball and had the dying seconds of the game to even the tie. However, they could not sink their last few chances to give Clementi Town their first win of Round 2.
SciTech are currently bottom of Group Y with and face Jurong West Secondary on Wednesday, July 18th. Clementi Town are currently ranked third in the group, level on points with Jurong West and River Valley High, and play against top-of-the-table Jurong Secondary on the same day.
