PESEB, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 – Peicai Secondary managed to hold off a resurgent Serangoon Garden Secondary in the last quarter to beat them 61-59 in Round 2 of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

The win gives Peicai a perfect 3-0 win-loss record in Round 2. The result, however, means that Serangoon Garden exit the competition with no wins out of four games in the second round.

The teams were evenly matched at the start, with Peicai edging out their opponents to win the first quarter 19-16.

In the second quarter, Serangoon Garden fought hard and managed to pull level with Peicai at one point. However, Peicai stepped up their game to take the first half 35-26.

Peicai dominated the third quarter. Peicai played a tight defence so that Serangoon Garden could hardly get close to the basket. Serangoon Garden was also wasteful with their shots, missing many open chances.

Peicai converted most of their chances to hold a comfortable 52-35 lead over their opponents going into the last quarter.

Serangoon Garden trailed Peicai by 17 points at one point but they did not give up, managing to reduce the deficit to 10 points. With Swee Zi Heng (#8) and Bryan Chew (#9) heading the attack, Serangoon Garden crawled back into the game and trailed Peicai by just two in the closing stages.

With 20 seconds left on the clock, a Serangoon Garden’s throw-in saw Swee Zi Heng (#8) get into the box and shoot, but his shot did not go in. Peicai’s captain Teh Zhong How (#9) caught the subsequent rebound and held on for his team to narrowly win 61-59.

Zi Heng may have been on the losing team, but he was the top scorer of the game with 18 points, followed by teammate Bryan Chew with 16 points, including one three-pointer. Peicai’s Alden Toh (#8) was the top scorer for this team with 12 points.

Despite the loss, Serangoon Garden’s captain Bryan Chew (#9) was happy with his team’s performance.

“We played well. In our previous games, we lost by more than five but in this match we managed to reduce the gap to two points. The team worked well together and encouraged one another,” said Bryan.

On the nerve-racking finish, Bryan said: “It was very stressful.”

P.S.: Peicai beat St Andrew’s Secondary 74-47 in their final Round 2 game to top their group. They will take on Fairfield Methodist School in the semi-finals.
