PESEB, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 — St. Andrew’s Secondary held on strong against a late surge by Peirce Secondary to win 45-33 in the second round of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
This win improved St. Andrew’s win-loss record to 2-2 while Peirce fell to 1-2.
St. Andrew’s dominated the first quarter due to a lack of accuracy on Peirce’s part, and carved out for themselves a 17-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
Peirce were pointless for the majority of the first quarter and their poor defending and lack of awareness also contributed to St. Andrew’s massive lead.
However, improvements in Peirce’s defence restricted St. Andrew’s to scoring just six points in the second quarter, cutting the Saints scoring by more than half.
St. Andrew’s began to lose steam after that as Peirce closed in on their opponents. St. Andrew’s coach decided in the middle of the third quarter to swap the players on court with his first team in order to hold Peirce.
Lax defending by St. Andrew’s also allowed Peirce to outscore them in the final two quarters, but Peirce could not recover from their rough first-quarter start, and lost 33-45.
The Peirce captain, Julian Wang (#6), agreed that his team player terribly in the first half because they gave up too many fouls, but applauded his team’s efforts to fight back in the second half.
P.S. Peirce went down 18-38 to Raffles Institution in their last game to finish fourth in their group with a 1-4 record.The Saints also lost their final group game, going down 47-74 to Peicai Secondary. The Saints finished third in their group with a 2-2 record. Peicai (4-0) and Raffles (3-1) finished third and second respectively and qualified for the semi-finals.
