Republic Polytechnic, Monday, July 23, 2012 — Defending champions Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) ground out an 8-0 win over St Andrew’s Secondary in the National C Division Rugby Championship.
It was a scrappy game of few chances played in the sweltering heat.
ACS(I) missed a penalty but a Saints knock-on resulted in a scrum from which Joshua Goh of ACS(I) scored in the corner. The try was not converted and ACS(I) walked off with a 5-0 half-time lead.
In the second half, both sides struggled to keep possession with neither side able to get a real sniff at scoring a try.
ACS(I) won a penalty midway through the second half and Roy Woo converted to make it 8-0. Saints missed a penalty with two minutes left to leave ACS(I) 8-0 winners at the final whistle.
ACS(I), who have yet to concede any points in the championship, have a thus far perfect record of five wins, zero draws and zero losses (5-0-0) and sole possession of first place in Group A.
St Andrew’s (3-1-1) and Raffles Institution (3-1-1) have identical records and their final group games against Pioneer Secondary (1-0-4) and St Joseph’s Institution (2-0-3) respectively will determine who finishes second in the group.
St Andrew’s and Raffles had played out a 19-19 draw when they met earlier on July 13th.
Raffles Institution did not make the Cup semi-finals in 2011, but ended up beating Damai Secondary 61-12 to win the Plate final.
ACS (Barker Road) are fourth with a 3-0-2 record and face a final game against ACS(I).
The top four teams in Group A move on to the Cup semi-finals while the bottom three will play in the Plate quarter-finals against the best teams from Group B and C.
The Mercy Rule — where the game is stopped after a team racks up 80 points — has been invoked five times in the 18 games played so far.
