Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 — Catholic High won their second National C Division Basketball match with a 64-25 thrashing of New Town Secondary.

Toh Tze Cong (#15) from Catholic High emerged as top scorer with a game-high 28 points, while New Town’s Wan Min Xiong (#10) was top scorer for his team with 13, nine of which were from free throws.

The Catholic High team were of a higher calibre than New Town and it showed from the get-go. Catholic High won the toss-up with an easy flick by Tze Cong (#15) and scored four consecutive baskets to catapult Catholic High into the lead. The first half ended with Catholic High leading 21-5.

New Town struggled for most of the game against the faster and more physical Catholic High players. Catholic High’s Tze Cong (#15) could be sandwiched by up to three defenders at a go, but he was still able to win the rebounds.

In comparison, the second quarter was a lacklustre affair where New Town only scored one basket and Catholic High were restricted to scoring just four points.

However, in the third quarter, careless play by New Town threw away their scoring chances, allowing Catholic High to pull ahead. They doubled their score by the end of the third quarter to lead 50-18.

Catholic High also clamped down on the New Town attack by tightening their defence, giving away many free throws as a result. In the third quarter alone, nine out of 11 of New Town’s points were from free throws, all scored by Cleve Low (#9) and Min Xiong (#10). 13 out of 25 of New Town’s total points were scored from free throws.

However, Catholic High’s mistakes were not enough to stop them winning comfortably by a score of 64-25.

Catholic High’s Captain, Warren Wong (#12), thought his team had a strong showing, but considers North Vista their main competitor in the group.

When asked about the match, New Town Captain Denilson Soh (#7) said: “Even though we lost, I think we put up a good fight against a strong team.”

Having already played both of the top ranked teams, Catholic High and North Vista, he considers Catholic High stronger because they had Tze Cong (#15) and “their defence was too strong”.

Denilson (#7) added that his hopes for the B Div team and his juniors next season is for both teams to make it to Nationals Top 4.

New Town play Dunman High in their final match of the season on Thursday, August 2nd.
