Kallang Netball Centre, Sunday, September 2, 2012 — Yew Tee CSC, Nee Soon East Team 1 and 2, Bukit Batok East, Yio Chu Kang CSC, Bukit Batok CSC, and Potong Pasir CSC are through to the quarter-finals of the Singapore National Games netball tournament.
Yio Chu Kang registered the highest score in their Round of 16 game against Tampines North CSC, winning 72-3.
The game between Potong Pasir and Marsiling was a lot closer, with the former winning only by two goals (18-16).
The netball tournament tipped off on Saturday, September 1st, with the Round of 32 stage. The tournament runs on a straight knockout format.
Banners, tentages and booths decorated Kallang Netball Centre for the inaugural Singapore National Games. Keen observers would note that many parts of the venue have been spruced up. Even the netball posts at Court 1 have been changed.
Spectators were soaking up the atmosphere at Kallang Netball Centre. Some netballers from Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School came to support their coach who was playing for Bedok CSC and mentioned that they were happy to be there to enjoy the music.
Chia Chee Lip, a teacher at Anglo-Chinese Junior College, was impressed with the setup of the event.
Said Chee Lip: “There are a lot of volunteers in the same uniform and also a formal announcer. It’s like the Youth Olympic Games. It makes the whole competition feel more prestigious.”
The rules were such that the top qualifying team in each Cluster were on the same side of the draw, while the Cluster runners-up were assigned to the other side. As a result, the stronger teams are facing each other in the early stage of the competition.
One such matchup was the game between Nee Soon East Team 2 and Bedok CSC which Nee Soon eventually won 30-25.
“This (match) could potentially be the finals kind of game, but it’s good for the spectators also,” said Eric Lee, team manager of Nee Soon, after watching his team beat Bedok.
“I think PA has done a really good job with (Singapore) Sports Council. They really brought the mood up. They’ve got sponsorship, drinks sponsorship, tentages around, music and everything.
“There’s a lot of publicity so it’s good for the players. They like to be featured, it’s good to have Red Sports to come and feature girls as well so that they have a sense of pride playing for the community,” added Eric.
