Bishan Stadium, Saturday, September 8, 2012 — Tang Weng Fei, 58, the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA) president, took to the Bishan Stadium track to clock a time of 15.02 seconds in the 100m dash.

Representing Holland-Bukit Timah, Weng Fei was the only runner in the masters’ 50-59 age group category. He is a former national hurdler and his last competitive race was in 1978.

“I have been doing a lot more gym work and brisk walking. I decided more than a month back to participate in this race just to give support. Moreover, as I am heading SAA, it is good to lead by example,” said Mr Tang.

“My last competition was in 1978, where I participated in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games,” said Mr Tan, a National University of Singapore engineering alumnus from the class of 1979.

He added: “My wife told me that I’m very gutsy; that after 34 years, I get to see you run again.”
