NUS Outdoor Court 1, Thursday, September 27, 2012 — The National University of Singapore (NUS) beat the Singapore Management University (SMU) 51-25 to make it two wins out of two games played in the Singapore University Games (SuniG) netball tournament.

After steamrolling past SIM 78-41 on Tuesday, they continued their fine form against SMU. There was no indication of that early on though as NUS could not pull away from the opponents, holding just a two-point, 9-7 lead after the first quarter.

However, NUS started to pull away from SMU in the second quarter as they tightened up their defense and their goal shooter and goal attack players successfully potted their shots without much difficulty. By half time, NUS had pulled ahead to lead 25-14.

After the break, SMU found it tough to maintain possession and NUS capitalized on that to go on an early 5-0 run early in the third quarter. Soon, NUS had a 17-point, 34-17 lead in their favor.

Towards the end of the third quarter, NUS’ goal attack player collided with SMU’s goal keeper and sat out for the rest of the game. When play resumed, NUS closed out the third quarter 39-19.

NUS extended their domination in the last quarter but play was disrupted due to a heavy downpour. Play resumed indoors and NUS closed out for a 51-25 win.

“We are happy with today’s win and are looking forward to the final game. Our strong attack and defense contributed to the win; the defenders worked hard to pick up loose balls and the midcourt stuck to their tight defense. This was being easily converted by our shooters,” said NUS captain Jaime Lye.

When asked if she was satisfied with her team’s performance, she added: “(We are) not satisfied as we can definitely do much better than what we did for today’s game. I believe I speak for the team as well.”

Looking forward to their next game against the Nanyang Technological University on Monday, which will decide who wins the SUniG netball title, Jaime added: “We are looking to improve on our attack (as) many of our passes got intercepted by the SMU defenders today. We definitely need to work on that.”
