Yio Chu Kang Sports Hall, Sunday, October 7, 2012 — Albatross FC beat Team U Sports Liitto FC 4-3 on penalties to win the women’s Division 1 title in the 2012 Singapore Floorball League (SFL). The game was tied 2-2 at full time.

In the men’s Division 1 final, Z-Athletica Red Flamingoes (ZARF) beat Merahan Knights 5-1 in regulation time to lift the championship title.

The SFL was held over a period of five months.

The ladies’ final was a meeting of the two Division 1 Conference Champions. The first two periods were goalless despite both teams pounding each other’s goal relentlessly.

In the third period, Liitto took advantage of their power play to score the first goal of the match. Albatross answered almost immediately to tie it up 1-1. Liitto then scored another goal from a free hit and almost looked like they had the title sewn up with just minutes left on the clock.

However, Albatross never gave up, and eventually found the net to equalise the game at 2-2 to send the game into a penalty shootout where they prevailed 4-3.

In the fast paced men’s final, it was Merahan Knights who scored within the first minute but ZARF came back strongly with two goals in the first period. Merahan Knights had no answer as ZARF piled on three more goals to win 5-1.

Mr Sani Mohd Salim, president of the Singapore Floorball Association, said: “We are pleased that the quality of players in the Division 1 teams have improved overall. Over the years, we have seen more school players from secondary schools and junior colleges joining the Singapore Floorball Leagues as they provide excellent platforms for younger players to improve their skills and gain experience beyond the school level tournaments.

“We are also very excited that Singapore was recently selected to host the 2014 World University Floorball Championships. Floorball enthusiasts will be able to catch university teams from around the world in action, right here on home soil.”
