NUS University Town EduSports Hall, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 — A speedy Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) beat the Singapore Management University (SMU) 71-60 in the women’s Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship.

NYP led by at least six points throughout all four quarters on their way to their second victory in a row in the championship. NYP beat the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) 46-44 in their opener.

Ng Shi Mei (#44) of NYP had a team-high 15 points and also played a prominent role in setting up points for her NYP teammates.

NYP captain, Chew Su Bing (#7) said: “Shi Mei was one of the highlights of the game and she is a playmaker who really stood out.”

Sharlene Huang (#12) of SMU finished with a game-high 24 points while teammate Lim Liying (#27) followed her with 16. Lim Qian Tong (#14) of SMU also lit up the court with her 3-point shooting with two on the night.

Su Bing admitted that SMU were a thorn in their side at times, but she was thankful that her fast-reacting teammates were able to play around their opponents. She believes that her team has a chance of making it to the semi-finals.

NYP seized control of the game from the tip off and led 19-11 after the first 10 minutes. NYP’s combination of speed and tactics, as well as fast breaks, saw them lead 35-29 and 56-45 at the end of the second and third quarters respectively.

NYP pulled away in the last five minutes to wrap up the 71-60 victory even as SMU tried to slow down the pace of the game.

SMU captain, Sharlene Huang (#12) said: “We put up a good fight even though we faced much stronger opponents.”

When quizzed on the highlight of the game, Sharlene replied: “The early part of the first quarter was the morale booster for the team as the close point difference spurred us to try to take the lead. It was a pity we were not able to.”

Sharlene also commended the NYP side whom she felt was “a great team with set plays that we were unable to stop, and was the strength they possessed.”

When asked about her predictions for the rest of the competition, she replied that her team will “take each game as it is and improve on our teamwork”, adding that they had to “cut down on silly mistakes and passes.”

SMU will next play the National University of Singapore (NUS) on January 19th, while NYP’s next game, which will also be against NUS, is scheduled for January 22nd.

All games are played at the NUS University Town (UTown) Edusports Hall.
