NUS University Town EduSports Hall, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 – The National University of Singapore (NUS) registered a 60-53 win over the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), allowing the girls to redeem themselves after their narrow 55-56 loss to Republic Polytechnic (RP) in their opening game of the women’s Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship.
Ei Xue Han (NUS #13) stood out by scoring four out of her team’s five 3-pointers while Chew Zi Qun (#5) of ITE scored a game-high 18 points, almost one third of her team’s score.
While ITE put up a brave fight, NUS were always comfortably ahead, and opened up a 20-point lead midway through the third set. Leading 46-30 at the start of the final quarter, NUS again stretched their lead to 20 points. ITE outscored NUS by nine points in the final 10 minutes quarter but could not stop NUS from wrapping up the win.
NUS captain Tammy Wong, a second-year psychology student, credited the win to the good tactics her coach had come up with.
“We had no expectations for this game. Our weak defense in the previous game against RP caused us to lose to them by just 1 point, so this time, we learnt from our mistake,” said Tammy.
When asked for her take on who would qualify for the semi-finals, she tipped her team and defending champions RP to make it through.
ITE vice captain Chew Zi Qun was satisfied with the team’s performance despite their loss, recognising that there was “more communication compared to the previous game”, especially since the team had faced difficulties in having full attendance for combined training sessions.
NUS will next take on the Singapore Management University (SMU) on Saturday, January 19th, 10am, while ITE will play RP, also on the same day.
Both games will be played at the UTown EduSports Halls.
