ITE College East (Simei), Saturday, February 2, 2013 – Soh Hua Qun (#1178) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) claimed the 800m title with a timing of 1 minute 56.62 seconds at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Track and Field Championships.
Hua Qun was 1.42 seconds outside the IVP record of 1:55.20 set by A Saravanan Pillai of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1995.
“I was intending to break the record,” said Hua Qun, adding that his performance in the race was slightly better than his practice runs. Hua Qun also said that he made it a point to pull away in the beginning.
Coming in second was Fang Jian Yong (#1285) of the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) in a time of 1:58.27. Third place went to Adriel Tay You Wei (#1180) of NUS, who had a time of 2:01.21, a personal best.
Jian Yong said: “It was quite a competitive race. I felt boxed in at the beginning.”
Indeed, as soon as the race started, the pack of athletes closed in together quickly. Hua Qun took the lead and begun to pull away from the pack. It was not until the final 400m where Adriel caught up to move into second place before Jian Yong started to pick up his pace to overtake Adriel eventually.
“I was pretty surprised that Jian Yong was behind me and did not go all out in the beginning,” said Adriel.
Upon reaching the last 100m, Hua Qun had already been way ahead of Jian Yong. Unfortunately for him, he could not break the IVP record.
Hua Qun’s next target is to qualify to run in the 2013 South-East Asian (SEA) Games for the 800m while Adriel is preparing for the upcoming Swift Athletes Association Cross Country.
