ITE College East (Simei), Saturday, February 2, 2013 — Goh Eng Wei was a comfortable winner in the 200m final at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Track and Field Championships. He stopped the clock at 21.89 seconds.
Eng Wei pulled away in the last 50m from 100m champion Ang Wei Si of Temasek Polytechnic (TP) who finished second with a time of 22.24. Afiqul Adib of TP came in third in 22.70.
Eng Wei and Wei Si broke out of their starting blocks well, and were neck and neck after rounding the curve. However, it was clear that Eng Wei was going to take home the gold after kicking his speed up another notch in the last 50m, leaving his opponents in the dust.
“It was a pretty decent race, as I had good opponents. Spurred me to push harder for a win,” said Eng Wei.
“The highlight of the race for me was the bend, as I had to push harder when I heard my opponents catching up,” he added.
When asked about his objectives for the future, Eng Wei said: “Hopefully, in the next 5 races to come, I will be able to qualify for the SEA Games.”
For runner-up Wei Si, he was glad with his new personal best (PB) of 22.18 clocked during the heats.
“It was not bad. Wasn’t perfect but I still think it was a good race. The sun was very hot. I managed to clock my personal best in the heats, so I’m happy with that,” said a smiling Wei Si.
“All in all, I’ll just take every race as it comes,” he added.
Afiqul earned his third-place finish after fighting off his opponents.
“I had a good race, and I think it was okay overall. I had a good start and managed to hold off the other competitors, especially at the last part,” said Afiqul.
“So far this has been my best performance, and I will be looking to better myself in the future races,” added Afiqul.
