PESEB, Thursday, February 28, 2013 – Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) got their second win when they beat St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) 19-13 in the National B Division Rugby Championship.

Anders Quah (#9) opened the scoring for ACS(BR) with a try and Jaren Heng (#15) successfully converted for a 7-0 lead.

SJI were then awarded a penalty which Vicknesh (#6) booted straight between the woodworks to reduce the deficit to four points at 3-7.

“We managed to stick to our game plan,” said SJI’s captain, Anders (#8).

SJI certainly did as they scored another converted try just before half time through Arend Wong (#13) with Vicknesh converting again. At half time, SJI led 10-7.

In the second half, SJI were given yet another penalty and Vicknesh took it successfully to stretch SJI’s lead to 13-7.

Their lead was short-lived as Jared Tang (#25) of ACS(BR) soon muscled his way over the try line to make it 12-13. But before ACS(BR) could attempt the conversion, the lighting warning system went off.

After a 30-minute delay, the game resumed with Jaren taking the conversion kick. Unfortunately for him, it was not a good kick and ACS(BR) remained one point behind.

As ACS(BR)’s captain, Kamen Tang (#3), said: “They (SJI) were a strong team and hungry to win the match.”

ACS(BR)’s efforts finally paid off when Ahmad Zhuri (#13) scored a try to put the boys in blue ahead. Jaren converted the try and ACS(BR) were six points clear at 19-13.

To their credit, SJI did not give up and made a strong final attempt to get a converted try, eventually coming close on one occasion. But ACS(BR) was not to be denied as they defended stoutly in the dying minutes of the game to show that they had learnt a lesson from their previous loss to St Andrew’s.

SJI’s captain, Anders, said: “We made mistakes at crucial moments.”

SJI will next play Raffles Institution on Tuesday, March 5th at 4.30pm while ACS(BR) will face Damai Secondary next Thursday, March 7th at 3pm. Both games will be played at PESEB.
