Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, March 4, 2013 – Deyi Secondary dominated the semi-final against Compassvale Secondary to win 89-14 in the North Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
In an earlier preliminary round encounter between the two teams, Deyi had beaten Compassvale 35-20.
“We did better today than the previous time we played with them. In our previous game, we were tied in our first quarter. Our defense was aggressive today,” said Lew Shu Ying (#10), Deyi’s captain.
Mabel Koh (#4) of Deyi was the game’s top scorer with 17 points. Her teammate Lee Jia Tong (#8) was just a point away with 16. Compassvale’s Lee Yu Zhen (#11) scored a team-high of 7 points.
Right from the first quarter, it was evident that Deyi were more dominant. Deyi had more possession of the ball and were able to make passes more accurately. By the end of the first quarter, Deyi had a 10-point, 18-8 lead.
Compassvale opened the second quarter with Yu Zhen scoring two points. However, the two points were the only ones that Compassvale scored in that quarter. After Yu Zhen’s two points, Deyi went on a 21-point scoring streak to lead 39-10 at half time.
Compassvale’s captain, Low Liang Jun Zoe (#5), said: “We did very badly today and did not defend well.”
In the second half, Deyi continued with their scoring while Compassvale were not able to keep possession of the ball. The third quarter was a repeat of the second. Deyi scored six points first, before Yu Zhen replied with two for Compassvale. Again, those were the only points for Compassvale in the quarter.
Deyi scored 22 points in the quarter to stretch their lead to 49 points at 61-12. Deyi again limited Compassvale to two points in the fourth quarter to win by a massive 75 points.
Deyi will face North Vista Secondary in the final on Monday, March 11th, 1pm. Compassvale play against Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary for third on Wednesday, March 6th at 1pm. Both games are at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
