Anglican High School, Friday, March 8, 2013 – Dunman Secondary made up for last year’s final loss when they beat Anglican High 45-38 to win the East Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship. In 2012, Anglican High had defeated Dunman 53-45 to claim the title.

Putri Nur Syazwani (#5) of Dunman ended with a game-high of 17 points. Anglican High’s Tan Yi Jun (#4), Pan Xin Lei (#7) and Yip Xin Yi Louise (#11) all had a team-high of 8 points each.

In the first quarter, both teams were equally aggressive and quick with their plays. However, they were both unable to score for the first four minutes. Equally matched, it was a low-scoring quarter, with Anglican High outscoring Dunman 8-6 after the first 10 minutes.

Anglican High started the second quarter with a 3-pointer from Ong Sze Ming (#9) but Dunman replied with 3-pointers each from Putri and Sharon Lee Mi Yun (#8).

Though Dunman were getting dispossessed more and the Anglican High players were picking up their pace, it was still a fairly even quarter with Anglican High just outscoring their opponents just one point, 15-14, to take a 23-20 lead into half time.

Dunman Secondary’s captain, Ong Sin Kee (#6), said: “We did not play well in the first half. We were anxious.”

The turn of events started in the second half. Dunman’s Putri opened with two points, which was then countered by Anglican High’s Louise. Putri scored two again and Yi Jun of Anglican High replied immediately with two of her own. At this point, Anglican High were still leading by three points at 27-24.

Sin Kee of Dunman then leveled the game at 27-27 with a 3-pointer. Anglican came back with five straight points through Amelie Lim (#8) with a 3-pointer and Ungku Sofia Raihanah (#11) with two. A free throw by Jaslyn Koh (#15) gave Anglican High a short-lived two-point lead at 31-29 but Sin Kee made sure Dunman came back to level at 31-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Dunman’s captain, Sin Kee, said: “We calmed down after halftime and picked up. We did not give up and preserved even though we were losing in the third quarter.”

The fourth quarter saw Anglican High go on a 6-0 scoring run. Yi Jun dropped a 3-pointer, Amelie sank a free throw and Sze Ming bagged another two points to give Anglican High a 37-31 lead.

Dunman then exploded for 12 straight points, with Putri responsible for 10 of those. Dunman now led by six, at 43-37.

Anglican High’s Yi Jun aced a free throw to reduce the gap to five points but Sharon scored two points for Dunman to ensure her team finished with a seven-point win.

Xin Lei, Anglican High’s captain, said: “We put in a lot of effort to play. It was okay to have lost, since we tried out best. We will try better in the Nationals.”

Xin Lei also felt that her team did not give up till the end and supported one another. Throughout the competition, she and her team learnt to not let defeat knock them down. Instead, they believe it will make them stronger.

Dunman’s captain, Sin Kee said: “The course of the competition has allowed my teammates to understand each other better and to play to each other’s strengths.”
