Anglican High School, Friday, March 8, 2013 – Dunman Secondary defeated Anglican high 64-61 to retain their East Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

In 2012, Dunman won the zonal title by 22 points (71-49) but they were made to work much harder to turn around the game and eventually win it.

Anglican High’s Yap Teng Suan (#9) scored a game-high of 24 points while Dunman’s Bryan Ng (#12) had a team-high of 14.

It was a tight first quarter with both teams equally aggressive. However, Dunman were lacking in their finish and this allowed Anglican High to sneak ahead and have a four-point 14-10 lead.

The second quarter was when Anglican High capitalised on their fast plays. Though Teng Suan was physically smaller than his opponents, he was still able to put up a good fight. With Dunman still missing quite a fair number of their shots, this gave Anglican High the chance to pull away.

The teams went into half-time with Anglican High outscoring Dunman 24-9 in the second quarter, giving them an overall 19-point lead at 38-19.

Dunman Secondary’s captain, Gibson Tay (#8), said: “We did not expect to be down by so many points.”

Hammond Lek (#7), Anglican High’s captain, said: “We started off well, but we did not treasure our lead and slackened in the second half.”

The third quarter started with Teng Suan scoring two points for Anglican High to give his team the largest lead in the game of 21 points at 40-19. But Anglican High lost momentum in the quarter and Dunman got their act together to outscore Anglican High 18-9, reducing the deficit to 10 points (47-37).

The fourth quarter really displayed the strength of the Dunman team. Players like Xu Teck Chong (#5) were scoring consistently as Dunman placed pressure on Anglican High by closing the gap slowly but surely.

In addition, the fourth quarter saw Anglican High’s Shawn Toh (#6), Li Chuan (#10) and Eugene Tan (#12) all picking up their fifth personal fouls.

The 10-point gap remained until 51-41, with Anglican High leading. Bryan Ng (#12) and Nasrullah B. Suhairi (#9) both scored two points each to bring Dunman to within six at 51-45. Shawn picked up two points for Anglican High, pushing the lead to eight points.

A 3-pointer from Nasrullah and another two by Bryan gave Dunman five more points and Anglican High’s lead was now down to just three at 53-50. Anglican High’s Shawn responded with a 3-pointer, giving his team a six-point (56-50) breathing room.

But Dunman came back with six unanswered points through Gibson, Nasrullah and Bryan and the game was now tied at 56-56. Bryan scored a free throw which gave Dunman a one-point lead but Anglican High’s Tung Yew Yu (#11) took back the lead (58-57). Teng Suan scored another layup, giving Anglican High a three-point lead (60-57). Mohamed Yussoff (#15) of Dunman responded with another two, leaving Anglican High only one point ahead at 59-60.

In the crucial moments of the final quarter, Darien Mark Anonuevo (#6) scored both his free throws to give Dunman a 61-60 lead but Anglican High’s Teng Suan free throw tied it up again at 61-61.

Dunman then went three points (64-61) ahead through Darien and Bryan to put pressure on Anglican High, forcing a timeout. With barely three seconds left, possession was with Anglican High. Teng Suan launched it for a final 3-pointer, but it hit the rim of the basket and went out. The buzzer went and Dunman had made an astonishing comeback win.

Dunman Secondary’s captain, Gibson, said: “We worked hard and persevered all the way. We need to be less complacent.”

Hammond, Anglican High’s captain, commented: “We matured as a team throughout this competition and our defense is much better now. Dunman are a strong team with big, aggressive and hardworking players. Since they were taller in general, our defense was important.”
