Choa Chu Kang Sports Complex, Thursday, April 11, 2013 — Ong Sin Yao of Chung Cheng High (Main) attained gold when he won the B Division 400m final in a time of 52.48 seconds at the 54th National Schools Track and Field Championships. Muhammad Shahrieza bin Norzaha (#104) of Singapore Sports School was second in 53.05s while Deyi Secondary’s Cavin Christopher Peter came in third with 53.06s.
It was the first medal of the championships for both Chung Cheng High and Deyi.
The B Division record is 49.75s and was set by Jamie Ross Coates, then of Singapore Sports School, in 2008.
After the first 100m, Sin Yao, Shahrieza, Chua Kia Loon (#96) of Singapore Sports School, Hariharan Elavarsu (#86) of Seng Kang Secondary and Muahammad Shahizam Bin Rasid (#241) of Peirce Secondary were all in a pack.
At the final bend around the track, Cavin started to catch up. In the final 100 metres, Sin Yao took the lead, leaving Shahrieza and Cavin to fight it out before Shahrieza eventually won by just 0.01s.
Gold medalist Sin Yao said: “It was a great race and everybody fought hard. My pacing was good, but the ending was not smooth. They (opponents) put up a strong fight, especially the runner (Shahrieza) from Singapore Sports School.”
Shahrieza found it to be a challenging race and was not expecting to win a medal. “It was a personal best for me but I would like to be able to improve on my last 100m. The opponents were very friendly and respectable. I would also like to thank my coach Remy and my friends for supporting me.”
Cavin, who finished third, was glad he overcome a bad start.
“My starting was not good, but I managed to pick up. I pushed well in the last 150 metres, but improvements can be made, especially at the last 10 to 20 metres,” said Cavin.
Cavin also noted the strong competition, especially from Shahrieza.
“They really pushed me and made me want to chase them,” Cavin added.
