vision 2030 live better through sports

Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 17, 2013 — Carys Hor of Nanyang Girls’ High established herself as the middle distance queen in the school scene, completing her B Division 800 metres final in a time of 2 minutes 30 seconds at the 54th National Schools Track and Field Championships to win her third consecutive gold in the event.

She had also struck gold in her other event, the 1,500m, which she has won four years straight.

Grace Ng of Singapore Sports School managed to grab the silver in 2:32.21, just before Annika Mock of CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), last year’s C Division 800m champion, crossed the line a mere 0.52s later.

Initially, Grace and fellow teammate Stacey Choo had taken the lead, with Carys content to follow their pace. However, by the 350m mark, Carys decided to take the lead, completing the first lap in 75s, on track for a time of 2:30.

There was a lot of hustle and bustle in the final lap, with Lee Yuet Zhen of Cedar Girls’ moving up to match Carys’ pace in her valiant attempt for a podium finish. Carys, however, used her feared finishing kick to establish a gap between herself and the rest of the field, securing her the gold.

Meanwhile, Grace overtook Yuet Zhen at the last bend, with Annika following her closely. Although Annika put up a hard fight, the finish line came up too soon for her, with Grace finishing just a step ahead of her.

“I was not expecting to clock such a good timing!” exclaimed Grace, who overwrote her personal best.

“Going into the race, my coach (Mr Eugene Lee) was aspiring for me to be in the top three. My race plan was to follow the leader, and then just try my best to keep up in the last round!”

“I will still be in the B Division next year, so I hope I can get a new personal best!” Grace added.

She also shared who her role models were. “Carys is a really great inspiration to me, having won gold every year! Annika is another competitor that I look up to, being last year’s C Division champion.”
