Choa Chu Kang Sports Complex, Wednesday, April 17, 2013 — Muhammad Syazani Bin Abdul Wahid of Singapore Sports School edged out Timothy Ong of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) by 0.1s to win the B Division 100m final in 11.18 seconds at the 54th National Schools Track and Field Championships.
Timothy, the B Division 200m gold medalist, stopped the clock at 11.28s while Kennard Chin of St. Joseph’s Institution won his second bronze in 11.49s.
The B Division 100m record is 10.90s, set by Shahrir Mohd Anuar, then of Singapore Sports School, in 2009.
A surprised Syanzani said: “I did not think that I will get the gold medal. My starting today was strong, but I should have pushed more at the ending. My competitors were really friendly and supportive. I would also like to thank my coach Remy Gan and my friends for supporting me.”
An early misjudgment made by Kennard was what cost him the race. “Usually, I was expecting the starter to hold between saying ‘Set’ and firing the starting gun. But he shot the gun early, so I had to chase from the back of the group,” said Kennard.
Kennard added: “I could have done better. The competitors were fast and I was hoping to have a good fight with Timothy to contend for second place. Overall, it was a good race.”
