Singapore Sports School, Wednesday, April 24, 2013 — Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) set a new meet record in the boys’ A Division 4×50 metres medley relay final at the 54th National Schools Swimming Championships, when they won the race in a time of 1 minute 45.80 seconds. The previous record of 1:46.31 was set by Raffles Institution in 2010.
The ACS(I) team consisted of Quah Zheng Wen, Lionel Khoo, Jerryl Yong and Wang Yi.
Zheng Wen commented: “It feels good to break the record.”
The 16-year-old Olympian swam a lead-off backstroke leg of 26.15 seconds to break his own National Open and Under-17 record by four hundredths of a second.
Incidentally, Rainer Ng, the lead-off swimmer for the RI team that set the meet record three years ago, had also bettered the National Open 50m backstroke mark with his swim then.
“The race was exciting. We wanted to contribute more while we still have the chance to,” said Lionel, who holds the National Open 200m breaststroke record.
The 18-year-old added: “We actually train together with the swimmers who set the previous record, so it will be quite good to tell them that we beat them!”
Raffles Institution claimed silver in 1:49.74 while Anglo-Chinese Junior College bagged bronze in 1:51.52.
