Temasek Junior College, Tuesday, April 9, 2013 — Temasek Junior College (TJC) beat Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 3–0 for their first win in the National A Division Girls’ Football Championship.

Nurin Nazifa (#4) wasted no time at all when she scored in the first few minutes of the match for TJC to take the lead. The HCI defenders scrambled to block the shot but to no avail as she comfortably placed the shot out of the reach of Neo Jing Ci, the HCI goalkeeper.

Although TJC had the edge in the match but they failed to convert their chances under pressure frmo a strong HCI defence.

A few minutes into the second-half of the match with TJC leading 1–0, the lightning alert sounded and the teams had to sit out for safety.

Going back into play after 30 minutes, TJC played the long ball, punting it high and wide towards the HCI goal but HCI’s defenders effectively dealt with them.

With 15 minutes gone in the second half, TJC made their scoring opportunity count when Nurin (#4) of TJC shot past two HCI defenders as well as the keeper to score her second goal to make it 2–0.

Five minutes later, Zen Juen (#14) of TJC received a pass from her teammate Nurin (#4) before scoring from the left side of the box to make it 3–0.

Jing Yi (#1), captain of TJC, felt that her team was lacklustre in the first half, before coming back with greater aggression and tenacity in the second half to secure their first win of their competition.

“They (Hwa Chong Institution) had a tight defence held up by a number of players who could make good clearances,” said the TJC captain.

Jing Yi added that her team’s aim in the competition is to give their opponents a good fight and not allow them an easy time.

Meanwhile, HCI’s vice-captain, Meri Tan (#8), felt that they probably were not playing their best, and were caught off-guard one too many times. However, she was still greatly heartened to see the whole team working hard during the entire match.

“The team felt quite disappointed that we were unable to score against TJC, given the chances that we had. Nonetheless, we felt that we have put in our best efforts given the circumstances,” said Meri Tan.

HCI were playing without their captain, Woo Fang (#20), who was hospitalised from their previous match. Meri Tan added that the result did not reflect what they were truly capable of.
