Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, April 26, 2013 — Raffles Institution (RI) claimed their third win in the National A Division Boys Basketball Championship after defeating Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) 58–32.
The game commenced with both teams matching each other point for point on the scoreboard. ACJC’s Alastair Loe (#9) knocked down two free throws in the dying seconds of the quarter to trail RI, 10–9.
Just seconds into the second quarter, a free throw by ACJC’s Desmond Goh (#15) tied the game at 10 apiece, but Zhuang Bao Kun (#4) sank in a quick three to extend RI’s lead at 13–10. With less than a minute to go, Wayne Tan (#11) converted a layup to help ACJC take a 19–20 lead into the half.
The third quarter was a demonstration of RI’s dominance. The team utilised a full court defensive press and successfully contained the ACJC scoring. RI’s Ng Yao Zhong (#6) was on fire as he sank three consecutive baskets from beyond the arc to boost the team morale. Yao Zhong poured in an impressive 16 points in the quarter alone. Coupled with ACJC’s inability to convert their baskets, RI went on a 28–0 run to end the quarter with a commanding 47–20 lead.
The final quarter saw Desmond (#15) step up for ACJC. Desmond made several defensive stops, including an impressive block on RI’s Bao Kun. ACJC had outscored RI 12–11 in the final quarter but it was not enough as a hook shot from RI’s Benedict Ng (#12) sealed the game for his team with a final score of 58–32.
RI’s captain, Alexander Loh (#7), commented: “We played played badly in the first half. We had no energy and no defence. The third quarter changed everything. We picked up from there and we were boosted by Yao Zhong’s impressive form.”
