PESEB (formerly CCAB), Friday, May 3, 2013 – Victoria Junior College (VJC) secured third in the National A Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship after triumphing over Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 3-1. Having lost their semi-final matches against Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) and Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC) respectively, both teams sought to end their season on a high.

Both teams were eager to clinch the first set to calm their nerves and HCI asserted their intentions from the first serve. Celene Wan (#2) of HCI shone throughout the match, leading the HCI line well with her powerful spikes which posed plenty of problems for VJC. Coupled with several inconsistencies that the VJC players were guilty of, it was not long before HCI pushed ahead and claimed the first set 25–19.

Not content with having to play second fiddle in this game, VJC upped their game with new found determination in the second and third sets. This forced HCI into committing errors which eventually led to them surrendering both sets by identical scores of 24–26 to VJC who now surged forward with a 2–1 lead.

Then came the fourth set which would determine if a fifth and final set would be played or whether VJC would emerge victorious in this encounter. Both coaches were equally eager to calm their players down, leading to timeout calls by both benches to issue instructions. In the concluding set, the team chemistry and ability of VJC proved too much for HCI to handle as they eventually won 25–7.

VJC’s captain, Cheryl Lee, who unsurprisingly was their standout performer, credited her team’s win to their ability to keep their focus and minimize individual errors.

“It was a great match as we had several rallies, and had to constantly improve on our blocking and find ways to vary our attacks,” said Cheryl.
