F1 Pit Building, Sunday, June 2, 2013 – Ang Chee Yong was the fastest Singaporean when he clocked 2 hours 56 minutes 23.37 seconds in the Sundown Marathon. His timing was good enough for a second-place finish behind Stuart Haynes of Great Britain who clocked 2:45:09.22. Four Singaporeans made the top three in the men’s and women’s marathons.

“I felt that the race was challenging as it was my first time participating in the Sundown Marathon, but overall it was a good race,” said Chee Yong.

Alex Ong, also of Singapore, finished third behind Chee Yong in 2:57:15.80.

Ong Kaifen was the fastest Singaporean woman in 3:30:33.62. She finished second behind Francesca Sist of Italy who clocked 3:26:43.99.

Said Kaifen: “It was an exciting and eventful race. I did not expect to come in second so I’m really happy to have won [second] despite having sprained my ankle last week!”

Another Singaporean, Neo Jie Shi, also made the podium, finishing third in 3:30:39.93.

The 10,000 marathon runners observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the Boston Marathon victims, before being flagged off at the F1 Pit Building. Singapore’s biggest night race saw a record-breaking number of 30,000 participants from over 80 countries. For the first time, the race was held over two nights with the 10km and half-marathon on Day 1 and the full marathon on Day 2.

The runners took a route that took them past the Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Financial Centre and the upcoming Singapore Sports Hub in the reverse direction to previous routes before passing through the Floating Platform and heading for the checkered flag at the Singapore Flyer.

The Sundown Marathon also saw 22 handcyclists. Out of the group, six of them were able to compete for the first time in the full marathon category. Michael Ngu, came in first, completing the course in 1:46:33.
