Republic Polytechnic, Thursday, May 30, 2012 — Victoria Junior College (VJC) saw off rivals and three-time defending champions Meridian Junior College (MJC) 6-2 to clinch the National A Division Boys’ Floorball Championship title. This was VJC’s second A Division floorball title in the last seven years.
To get to the final, VJC had beaten Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) 8–1 in one semi-final while MJC saw Temasek Junior College (TJC) 7–6 in the other. In the playoff for third place, ACJC beat TJC 5–2.
Both sides were no strangers to one another, having met in last year’s semi-finals. In that encounter, MJC triumphed 8–4. Not content with having to play second fiddle to their eastern rivals, VJC were determined to exact revenge this time round.
The match started off with a high tempo, with both sides exerting pressure well and having good possession. VJC drew first blood in this highly physical game, with Khairul Anuar bin Hamidon (VJC #8) finding Mohamad Hadi bin Mohamad Najib (VJC #7) who smashed in the opener in.
Early on in the second period, a mistake by the VJC defence saw MJC Captain Amshar Amin (MJC #9) through on goal but were only let off by the forward’s missed attempt. It was not long before VJC surged ahead through Hadi (VJC #7) once again after putting a rebound into the MJC net. The MJC response was swift with a goal through their #77 to make the score 2–1, leaving all to play for in the final period.
A goal from VJC forward Darryl Sim (VJC #9) saw VJC reclaim their two-goal advantage and that seemed to calm the side down. Following that, VJC piled on the pressure and eventually won a penalty after their player was brought down in the MJC half. MJC had VJC captain Matthew Yong (VJC #47) to thank as he placed his shot inches wide of the near post from the resulting penalty.
Matthew redeemed himself after providing an assist for Lee Chee Yong (VJC #46) to finish a neat one-two to place VJC in the driving seat with a score of 4-1. There was still time for both sides to score one each before VJC wrapped up the win following a goal from Nicholas Low (VJC #14) after MJC pulled their keeper.
“The team played with a lot to prove, they were willing to cover up for each other’s mistakes rather than throwing tantrums at one another,” said Matthew, the VJC captain. He went on to add that he felt the team was lucky not to conceded on several occasions and had VJC goalkeeper, Ezra Mo (VJC #2), to thank for keeping the team in the game throughout.
