Singapore Expo, Tuesday, June 11, 2013 — Sailors walked away with four major awards at the 2013 Singapore Sports Awards. The fraternity picked up the Sportsgirl of the Year Award, junior and senior Team of the Year (Event) awards, as well as the Coach of the Year award.
Rachel Lee Qing and Cecilia Low Rui Qi, were the 420 class dinghy champions at the 2012 World Championships. The Championships, held in Austria, saw sailors from 25 countries competing for the world titles in both the open and ladies categories. The field also included 2011 Optimist world champion Kimberly Lim, who has moved into the 420 class, and 2010 Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Ian Barrows from the US Virgin Islands.
The duo beat out the the national women’s table tennis team that had won the 2012 Olympic bronze. The women’s table tennis teams have dominated the Team of the Year (Event) award since 1998, winning it 12 times in 15 years.
Elisa Yukie Yokoyama walked away with the Sportsgirl of the Year award. At the 2012 IODA (International Optimist Dinghy Association) World Sailing Championships held in the Dominican Republic, Elisa emerged as the overall world champion as well as the girls’ world champion. The event saw 230 optimist sailors from 42 countries.
Elisa also combined with Jessica Goh, Loh Jia Yi, Edward Tan and Samuel Neo to win the junior Team of the Year (Event) award for their performances at the same championships where they beat the United States of America in the finals to win the Team Racing trophy.
Singapore sailors swept the top three individual positions with Samuel Neo finished a close second to Yukie in the overall standings while Jessica Goh was third.
The other two members – Loh Jiayi, who is also the 2012 Asian Optimist champion, finished fifth overall and Edward Tan was 45th. The Singapore team’s collective result was good enough to beat the U.S.A. to capture the Nations Cup.
Sailing coach Fernando Javier Alegre Arbulu walked away with the Coach of the Year award to round off a good night for the sailing fraternity.
