PESEB Court 2, Monday, July 15, 2013 — Kuo Chuan Presbyterian defeated Henderson Secondary 67–39 in Round 1 of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. With two wins in their pocket thus far after an opening 66–24 win over Guangyang Secondary, they are a step closer to moving into the second round of the Championship.
The game opened with a basket by Jonas Zhuang (#9) of Henderson. This was quickly leveled by Chay Hong Da (#6) of Kuo Chuan, before a nice lay-up shot by Chua Ming Hao (#10) gave Henderson back the lead. The first quarter ended with Kuo Chuan leading 13–9.
The second quarter saw Kuo Chuan leveling up their play in a bid to widen their lead. Chay Hong Da (#6) of Kuo Chuan scored seven points, with teammate Nicholas Loh (#12) scoring two, as Kuo Chuan restricted Henderson to just three points to lead 24–12. The last points in this quarter for Henderson came from Ho Sheng Yang (#14) as Kuo Chuan pulled away further to lead 33–16 by half time.
The third quarter saw Henderson coming back strongly with a three-pointer by Muhd Khairul (#8), who followed it up with another basket. Chua Ming Hao (#10) maintained Henderson’s momentum and followed up with another two baskets as well. Nevertheless, Kuo Chuan stuck to their game and managed to maintain their lead. Despite the tense atmosphere, Nicholas Loh (#12) of Kuo Chuan was calm enough to switch hands in midair to score the final basket before the end of the third quarter with Kuo Chuan leading by 22 points (53–31).
The final quarter saw Kuo Chuan coming back to dominate the court with a couple of fast breaks by Hong Da (#6) and Nicholas Loh (#12). However, Henderson did not give up, with Ng Xi Heng (#7) managing to put in a three-pointer and another basket consecutively. The fourth quarter eventually ended with Kuo Chuan winning by 28 points at 67–39.
Captain of Kuo Chuan Presbyterian, Chay Hong Da (#6), shared that his team felt very anxious about the match as they really wanted to win and had trained very hard for it. “At first, we only led by a bit. It was tough and we fought harder and it got better. It has been quite a while since our school has qualified for the second round and our target is to be part of the top four for Zonals.”
