Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 — Bukit Panjang Government High beat Crest Secondary 58–31 in Round 1 of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
Edmund Leong (#6) started the game rolling for Bukit Panjang with two quick baskets, but Jasper Tay (#10) responded for Chestnut Drive with his own layup to make it 4–2. Bukit Panjang quickly regrouped during a time-out and came back executing stifling defence, sparking a 12–0 run. With just a minute left, a rebound putback by Chestnut Drive’s Tan Xin Hao (#15) after a miss by Low Ming Wei (#7) iced the run to end the quarter trailing 16–4.
Physical play dominated the second quarter. Chestnut Drive stepped up on aggressive plays, hounding Bukit Panjang players whenever they got the ball. Xin Hao (#15) brought the deficit down to 10 points with a strong low-post basket. Chestnut Drive’s defence proved to be somewhat effective as they managed to limit the Bukit Panjang offence to mostly free throw attempts. With just five seconds on the clock, Ming Wei (#7) sped up court and hurled in a long jumper to beat the buzzer and end the quarter with Chestnut Drive still trailing 30–16.
Physical play persisted in the third quarter, with both teams trying hard to contain the other. Bukit Panjang players double-teamed any Chestnut Drive player who had the ball in their hands. Bukit Panjang outscored Chestnut Drive 12–10 to end the quarter leading 41–26.
The decisive final quarter clearly belonged to Bukit Panjang. The visibly exhausted Chestnut Drive players could not handle Bukit Panjang’s stifling defence and turned the ball over several times on sloppy passes and forced shots. The latter went on a 17–5 run to emerge victors with a final score of 58–31.
Bukit Panjang’s captain Edmund Leong (#6) commented: “It was a very intense game, quite a rough and tough game. They (Chestnut Drive) played with their all but we managed to pull through.”
