PESEB, Evans Road, Friday, July 19, 2013 – Raffles Institution got their National C Division Championship rugby season back on track with a comprehensive 85–0 mauling of Evergreen Secondary for their first win of the year.

Raffles suffered a rough start to their 2013 campaign, having lost their opening two matches to St. Joseph’s Institution and St. Andrew’s Secondary. Led by Joses Ng (#13), who was extremely accurate with his kicking, Raffles managed to win comfortably against Evergreen as they set their sights on a semi-final spot.

It took just two minutes for last year’s semi-finalists to get on the scoreboard with a converted try. Zuriel Chua (#12) immediately followed it up with a swift breakaway from the Evergreen defence, sprinting more than half the field to score Raffles’ second try.

Joses Ng got his team’s third try. The 14-year-old impressed with his kicking ability as he converted his first six attempts at the extra points and eventually made 10 out of 13 conversion attempts.

Zhu Hong Yi (#15), Jameson Chia (#16), Hazim B Fathul Rahman (#7), Thong Ziggy (#6) and Alexander Gunawan (#11) also got their names on the score sheet before the half ended for a huge 52-0 lead.

Much of the same followed in the second half as Raffles had their way on the field. It was not long before Joses scored the final try of the match and duly converted it to end the match, 85–0.

Raffles Institution coach Jamal was pleased with his team’s performance, but was careful not to get carried away by the result.

“The team played generally well,” commented coach Jamal. “We have a team that is less experienced when compared to ACS (Baker) or ACS (Independent). In terms of their level, they are higher than our boys.”

“We need to work on our fitness and take it game by game. It is so important to keep focus and see what result we can get.”

He also highlighted Joses as the man of the match.

“He (Joses) was the man of the match for me,” said coach Jamal. “He was calm and focused and he took his chances, even those at the corner. I hope he will be consistent with his kicking throughout the rest of the tournament.”
