National Sailing Centre, Saturday-Sunday, July 13-14, 2013 – Matthew Scott Lau finished strongly with eight points and a lead of three to win the Laser 4.7 category at the National Sailing Centre (NSC) Cup Series 2. Reynard Lee and Joel Neo tailed him with 11 and 17 points respectively.
Lau, who was sailing under the colours of SAF Yacht Club, attributed his success to the support received from his parents and school. The Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student also said experiences from previous classes and competitions, coupled together with the stronger winds, managed to provide him with a sufficient lead.
The NSC Cup Series 2, held off the shores of the National Sailing Centre, saw six races held for four events in 8-14 knot winds on the first day of racing and lighter winds with slight drizzles for the second.
The weather conditions proved favourable for Anthony Kiong who dominated the Laser Standard category by finishing with five points and leading by six. Alexey Filiminov finished in second place with 11 points, followed by Manfred Baudzus with 13.
Malone Pun won the Laser Radial category gold with 10 points. Joel Yin with 11 points and Jevyn Ong with 12 narrowly missed out on the gold. Pun said hard physical preparation before the event and employing proper tactics managed to give him an edge over the other competitors.
Geraldine Kok managed to be the victor of the Byte category by garnering 17 points. Raphael Ng took home the silver with 20 points, and Andre Chew settled with the bronze with 37 points.
The sailors will be competing in the NSC Cup Series 3 scheduled for November 16 and 17 to complete the series. Sailor’s race results from Series 1, 2 and 3 will be used to determine the overall winner of the NSC Cup Series Challenge Trophy for their respective events.
