Republic Boulevard, Sunday, November 3, 2013 – 18,000 runners took part in the Nike We Run Singapore that was flagged off at the F1 Pit Building.

Runners had the chance to choose alternate paths at three points along the 10km route. The alternate choices allowed runners to run on grass, along the Kallang River, and hear different music genres.

The practical effect of the split routes was to split the crowd up along congested areas of the race and give runners more breathing room and space to manoeuvre, especially since a noticeable number of runners were walking.

Runners submitted 13,000 suggestions during registration and Nike Singapore, the organisers, made the most popular suggestions reality at various points along the route.

“We have listened to our runners. That is why this year’s race theme is built around them and the personal choices that they make. It allows our runners to exercise their freedom and individualism to create a race that is uniquely theirs,” said Alvin Soo, the country marketing manager for Nike Singapore. “This is their race based on their rules. It is not simply about the finishing point, but the experience in getting there.”

American sprinter Allyson Felix, the 2012 Olympic 200m gold medalist, was on hand at the finish line to encourage runners to run an additional 1.5km after the finish line. Those who did had a chance to interact with Felix after the race.

“Running is as much about the journey as it is about the finish. We Run Singapore takes the running journey to a different level and makes it completely personal to the runner,” said Felix.

Nike We Run SG is part of Nike’s global We Run series. According to Nike, more than 350,000 runners will have taken over 3 billion strides in We Run races in 26 cities by the end of 2013. Nike’s We Run races range in distance from 5K to the full marathon.
