Myanmar, Tuesday, December 10, 2013 – Singapore bounced back from the disappointing 1–1 opening draw with Laos to beat Vietnam 1–0 at the 2013 Myanmar SEA Games football tournament.
Sahil Suhaimi was again the scorer for Singapore, scoring just before half time from inside the box following a Zulfahmi Arifin corner.
Vietnam, who had thrashed Brunei 7–0 in their opening game, created many chances but Singapore’s defensive line of Afiq Yunos, Safuwan Baharudin, Faritz Hameed and Shakir Hamzah held firm.
Vietnam were made to pay for not taking their chances when Sahil scored from a set piece corner.
Vietnam continued to create chances in the second half but could not find a way past the Singapore defence.
The win means Singapore are now top of their group.
“The result will be a morale booster for the boys as before this, we were a little bit under pressure. We needed to get a good result,” said head coach Aide Iskandar.
“Now we are top of the group with two games to go, but it doesn’t guarantee us a place in the semi-finals. We need to win the next two matches in order for us to stay safe.”
“The boys out up a splendid performance to get the result. And I’m very proud of the boys. You all know that Shakir hasn’t been training the last 4-5 days, (but he) did very well tonight. He gave his best, he gave his everything. I think that both of them (Safuwan and Afiq) played superb.
“Safuwan had a terrific game again today, (his) second game in two days. Afiq is growing, he did good the last game, and today he was fantastic. He won all the headers, he was quick, he made interceptions, both of them did very well and had very good games so far.”
Singapore next play Brunei on Friday, December 13.
In the group’s other game, Malaysia beat Brunei 2–0.
