Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, January 15, 2014 — Institute of Technical Education (ITE) beat Singapore Polytechnic (SP) 5–3 to secure a semi-final spot in the 2014 Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Floorball Championship.
From the start of the first period, it was evident that ITE were physically stronger, with them pressuring SP’s defence. Within the first five minutes, ITE scored two goals through forwards Nur Saliza (ITE #7) and Amira Nur Kartika (ITE #9).
However, SP responded through their skipper Li Yiqing (SP #18), who did a wrap around the goal post for her team to trail 1–2 at the end of the first period.
SP then went into a box play during the first minute of the second period after Nur Aziemah (SP #19) was given a two-minute penalty for multiple slashing. Despite their numerical disadvantage, SP managed to find an equalizing goal through their defender, Siti Nur Raihanah (SP #8), who successfully converted a rebound off the ITE goalkeeper.
However, ITE scored another three goals through Nur Saliza (ITE #7), Sarah Syakirah (ITE #19) and Amira Nur Kartika (ITE #9). The second period ended with ITE leading 5–2.
SP continued to take multiple shots but failed to convert their chances until Nur Aziemah (SP #19) tapped in a rebound, narrowing the deficit to two (3–5). The last few minutes of the game were intense as both teams tried their best to contain each other.
Eventually, the physically stronger ITE side managed to hold on to their lead and saw off SP to win 5–3.
Having lost to National University of Singapore (NUS) 1–11, SP captain Yiqing (SP #18) thought her team put up a stronger performance against the bigger ITE players. She commented: “In terms of skills, we were on par but it was obvious that we were physically weaker.”
ITE captain, Nur Syafawati (ITE #30) said: “I think the team did very well despite having only a few training sessions. Besides, there has not been a session where the full squad is present. Our next game against NUS will be tough and we hope to win. I believe in everyone in the team and that they will do their best.”
Nur Saliza (ITE #7) felt that her team was lucky to have won. “We were lucky as it was the first time that the team came together to play as we have not trained together during the period leading up to the season,” added Nur Saliza.
In Group 2, Republic Polytechnic (RP) beat Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) 8–3 to top their group.
With the win against SP, ITE have secured a spot in the semi-finals.
