NTU Sports and Recreation Centre, Friday, January 17, 2014 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) led throughout the game to bring down National University of Singapore (NUS) 88–55 in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship.

Ng Hanbin (SIM #22) scored a game-high 17 points, while Hong Kah Qi (NUS #6) had a team-high 12 points.

NUS’s commendable defensive efforts came to naught in the first quarter as SIM were determined in their drives to the basket, putting up a dominant performance. The defensive presence of Au Jin Kai (NUS #8) forced several turnovers but NUS were unable to convert the chances. As such the quarter ended with SIM building up an early lead of 21–12.

The second quarter started off with Hanbin (SIM #22) getting the rebound and initiating a fast break, where the ball was then passed to Woo Tian Wei (SIM #45) who dribbled into the paint with a good finishing. Zhou Zhen Jie (SIM #34) was especially diligent on both offensive and defensive ends, driving past defenders, converting shot attempts and grabbing rebounds.

NUS seemed to be overwhelmed by SIM’s dominance but despite that, they managed to put up a good fight in the paint, thus drawing several fouls and earning free throw chances. The team totalled 6 points from the free throws alone, with Jin Kai (NUS #8) contributing 4 points, followed by a point each from Gavin Goh (NUS #10) and Samuel Ch’ng (NUS #22).

In the third quarter, Zhen Jie (SIM #34) continued to be on the ball as he put up a strong defense against Lim Shengyu (NUS #5), leading to many transition offenses for his team. He was also setting up his team mates for easy baskets. NUS were visibly limited by SIM’s defence as they struggled to get the ball within the 3-point line. They put up a few shot attempts but were unable to convert, thus allowing the gap to widen. The quarter ended with SIM leading 67–40.

By the fourth quarter, SIM were seemingly confident and played at their pace with a comfortable lead, while NUS were playing the catch-up game. NUS continued to put up an admirable team effort both offensively and defensively as the seconds ticked by. They did not stop trying until the eventual moment, where it was too large a deficit for the team to overcome. The game ended with SIM dominating 88–55.

SIM captain Lim Yong Teck (#13) said: “I think the team did brilliant today, compared to how we fared against Temasek Polytechnic (TP) in our first game. Communication was key and the team executed that well on both ends of the court today. Zhen Jie (SIM #34) played an excellent offensive and defensive game today, helping us make several defensive stops.”

NUS captain Samuel (#22) said: “I think we lost on experience and composure. That was the key to our loss today. I guess we were too eager to win, so much so that we neglected our style of play. We let them hit several 3-pointers and they got very confident thereafter. Then they just kept shooting after that.”
