Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 29, 2014 — Seng Kang Secondary pulled away in the second half to defeat Canberra Secondary 52–30.

Nigel Teo (Seng Kang #13) recorded an impressive game-high 22 points, while Tan Yi Yong (Canberra #9) contributed a team-high 7 points.

It was a close fight in the first quarter as both teams appeared to be comparable in ability. The first quarter ended with Seng Kang taking a slim 12–9 lead.

In the second quarter, Seng Kang executed a strong defence, forcing Canberra to take forced shots. Despite that, Leon Sim (Canberra #12) displayed perseverance as he tried going for shots in the paint time and time again.

Canberra also had a number of fast breaks, giving them the opportunity to pull away with the scoring but they failed to make good use of their chances.

On the other hand, Rayner Tay (Seng Kang #4) was on the ball and controlled the pace of the game well. Seng Kang executed swift transition defence, but Canberra managed to tie the game at 18 apiece at the end of the first half.

Canberra grabbed the early lead in the third quarter, but Seng Kang gradually caught up and extended their lead, never looking back thereafter. They executed good defence which resulted in many transition baskets, adding easy points to the score sheet. Nigel (Seng Kang #13) was diligent on the offensive and defensive boards.

In the last quarter, Nigel (#13) had several put-backs for Seng Kang with his dominating offensive rebounds. He blew past his defenders easily, tallying eight points in the quarter alone.

Rayner (Seng Kang #4) was marked by Lim Teck Leong (Canberra #7), but that only made him more determined as he continued to command offensive plays well.

Canberra lost momentum in the final quarter and allowed Seng Kang to go on a 19–4 scoring run. Seng Kang emerged eventual victors with a 52–30 win.

Canberra captain Teck Leong (#7) said, “We played very badly. We did not get rebounds and did not execute our shots and layups well. Our main emphasis next match would be on defence.”

Seng Kang captain Rayner (#4) said, “My team had great team work. We were helping each other out a lot and did not give up on one another. We also fought for every ball. We did okay in our communication, but there is still room for improvement. We are aiming for a top four placing in the zonals.”
